UFC 251 title fight on hold, Shevchenko vs. Calderwood ‘pushed back’

Just because the coronavirus is wreaking havoc on the 2020 MMA schedule doesn’t mean that more standard MMA weirdness can’t also be afoot. Because apparently it’s not COVID-19 concerns behind the latest cancellation in the UFC schedule but, as MMA Junkie reports, an injury to flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko that’s put the planned main event of UFC 251 on ice. No word yet as to just what that injury might be.

Title challenger Joanne Calderwood, didn’t give many details, but was the first one to break the news about the delay of her fight on a recent episode of MMA Fighting’s Eurobash podcast.

“We got word last week that it’s going to get pushed back,” Calderwood said of her planned June bout against Shevchenko.

“Not because of this whole thing, but something on her end. I’m not sure if I’m supposed to say that, but we know for sure that it’s not going to be on June 6. I don’t know, I’m not sure what happened or what’s what, but it’s been pushed back. It could be a blessing in disguise.”

Calderwood (14-4) got her chance to pick up UFC gold coming off a narrow split decision win over Andrea Lee at UFC 242 back in August of last year. That win provided a fast bounce-back from her June loss to Katlyn Chookagian, who fought Shevchenko for the belt in February—losing by third round TKO.

For Shevchenko, the queen of the 125 lb weight class is unbeaten since dropping from the bantamweight division off a contentious split decision loss to Amanda Nunes in 2017. She’s racked up five straight wins now at flyweight, including three title defenses, after winning the vacant title in a 2018 decision over Joanna Jedrzejczyk. Stay tuned for more UFC schedule updates as 2020 continues to be a wild world for MMA’s largest promotion.

UFC signs RIZIN bantamweight sensation Manel Kape

It looks like light heavyweight Jiri Prochazka isn’t the only RIZIN champion on his way to the UFC. The Czech fighter picked up his contract to compete in the Octagon back in January, off a KO win over longtime UFC middleweight CB Dollaway. On March 30th AKA Thailand announced Prochazka would be joined by RIZIN bantamweight champion Manel Kape.

Kape took the belt, vacated by Kyoji Horiguchi following a recent knee injury, in a victory over homegrown star Kai Asakura—who defeated Horiguchi via shocking upset KO in a non-title bout back in August of last year. That win, a TKO in the second round, marked the third straight stoppage victory for the Portuguese ‘Prodigio.’ And it looks like it picked him up a 4-fight UFC contract in the process.

Kape (15-4) went 6-3 over his RIZIN career, with a submission loss to Horiguchi in the 2017 RIZIN Grand Prix, after beating Ian McCall and Erson Yamamoto. He also dropped a split decision to Asakura in 2018, and a unanimous decision to former UFC flyweight Ulka Sasaki.

No telling when he’ll make his debut in the Octagon. With the current COVID-19 pandemic the UFC’s 2020 schedule is very much up in the air. Hopefully things will get back to some sense of normalcy over the summer and a whole new batch of fans will get their chance to watch Kape perform soon.

Report: UFC 249 could be headed to Florida

We may not even be sure who will be headlining the event at this point, or what other fights will end up on the card. But, if UFC 249 does take place on April 18th as planned, it could be going down in the great state of Florida. That’s the report coming from MMA Fighting’s Steven Marrocco, who notes that current Governor Ron DeSantis’ emergency measures in response to the COVID-19 pandemic don’t prevent the state athletic commission from sanctioning an event like the UFC. At least, that’s the case for now.

In the early stages of the coronavirus outbreak in the US, the UFC had hoped to move their events to their private Apex facility in Las Vegas. Unfortunately for the world’s largest MMA promotion, as the pandemic response grew, increasing social distancing guidlines caused the Nevada Commission to put the kibosh on that plan. Similar moves to hold events on tribal lands were quickly snuffed out as well.

Those circumstances eventually led the UFC to cancel their next three MMA events, up until UFC 249: Khabib vs. Ferguson. Dana White has been steadfast for weeks now that the planned blockbuster PPV event would go forward, no question. However, in the past few days, reports have come in that Khabib Nurmagomedov has found himself on lockdown in Russia, and unable to leave the country. Justin Gaethje has been penciled in as a potential replacement, but without a set venue and without a set main event, for now all plans remain up in the air.

‘Dana can never win’ – Sonnen defends UFC’s event plans despite ‘fair’ media concerns

Leave it to Chael Sonnen to be one of the few combat sports promoters in the world still moving ahead with event plans in the midst of the current COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. The former UFC title challenger and current ESPN talking head is also the man in charge of the Submission Underground competitive grappling events, the twelfth of which takes place this Sunday, March 29th in Portland, OR. The event is one of the few physical sporting competitions taking place in the US this week, as restrictions on gatherings and recommendations of social distancing remain in place.

In a recent interview with MMA Fighting, Sonnen spoke about the difficulty of putting on an event under these conditions. And why, despite feeling that fan and media concerns about holding these kinds of competitions right now are valid, he’s still moving ahead with his plans.

“I think it’s very fair,” Sonnen responded when asked about criticisms over holding events that both he and Dana White have received. “I mean, we’ve gone out of our way, we’ve brought in medical personnel, we’ve brought in experts. We will have everybody quarantined, we will follow every single rule that there is, no matter how many times that rule changes between now and then. I think it’s very fair that people are concerned. I think they should respect what’s going on.

“I personally don’t prescribe to ‘everything stops in its tracks,’ and it does appear that those are your only two choices right now, right? You’ve got a green light and you got a red light. Look, there’s ways to do things that are safe. There’s ways to do things where you’re listening to the experts and you’re in full compliance. If you can pull that off and move forward? I mean, people need to make a living. People need to have a job, have something to do, have their goals, and move forward. I’m not going to stop them, but I’m not going to overly look away, man. We’re dealing with something serious.”

When asked more particularly about Dana White’s recent tirades against media who have questioned his plans to hold UFC events in the near future – as well as the UFC’s recent, and ultimately unsuccessful, attempts to prevent any events from being cancelled at all – Sonnen gave a strong defense of the UFC president. Noting that while many people may be publicly lambasting him for his apparent lack of caution, he’s also getting a lot of private support and concern from fighters who depend on fight cards to continue making a living.

“You know, look, I—it seems that Dana can never win,” Sonnen explained. “I mean, nobody ever wants to give him any credit. All he’s trying to do is what he said he will do. He’s got everybody calling him quietly. People come out publicly and they want to challenge him, privately they want to call him and say, ‘Man, do I got a job? Do I have something to do? I’ve got a family, how do I plan my year?’ The only way he knows how to answer that question with a ‘yes’ is by doing business.

“That’s what he is, is a businessman. So he goes out and does what he’s supposed to do, that benefits all sorts of people that count on him—but they all do that private. Then publicly, they want to come out like they’re a bigger expert than he is. Man, nobody’s pretending to be an expert, they’re just pretending that they move life forward! What’s wrong with that message, how can that possibly be a bad message!”

Currently, White is adamant in his plan that UFC 249 will go forward on April 18th, headlined by a lightweight bout between Tony Ferguson and champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. That fight card had been scheduled to take place in Brooklyn, NY. However, state ordered restrictions on sporting events and gatherings have left the promotion scrambling for a new event space. Just where, or even if, the event will land still remains up in the air.

Conor McGregor calls for airport closures, military mobilization: ‘Five weeks to freedom, we can do this’

While many fighters are using this sudden gap in the UFC schedule to work on their basketball games, take their training outdoors, or just generally goof around and have some fun (maybe too much fun in Jon Jones’ case), superstar Conor McGregor has taken this time to do some heavy campaigning. But, it’s not for a title shot against Khabib Nurmagomedov, or another multi-million dollar boxing payday. Instead he’s been releasing speeches directed at the Irish government, demanding that they deliver a swift and uncompromising response to the COVID-19 pandemic that’s currently sweeping the globe.

In his first video, McGregor asked that the nation be placed on lockdown immediately, with the closure of all non-essential businesses, and the halt of all non-essential travel. That lockdown is now currently underway. And while McGregor’s latest video praises those efforts, he’s now asking his country to go that much further. Namely, to mobilize the military to help prevent people from breaking lockdown guidelines. And he’s asking the country to close its airports to all but the most necessary delivery of medical personnel and supplies.

Backed by the words of MIT-trained scientist Yaneer Bar-Yam, McGregor is hoping that five weeks of intensive lockdown will essentially stop the spread of the COVID-19 virus in Ireland.

The countdown is on!

“Hello everyone, hello Ireland.

“We have now entered a more substantial lockdown, and I am pleased to see it.” Conor said in a new four-and-a-half minute video released on Instagram. “You see, if you do not enter a game, you cannot win it. We have now entered this game and, with strict adherence to the methods, we will win. To the Irish public, we must abide by the legislations put forth tonight by our leaders. No further than 2km from home, no unessential travel, and full closure of all non-essential business. Now more than ever we must abide by this, and I pray for the health and safety of our country that we do. The fate of our lives, and the lives of our loved ones, depends upon it.

“Together we must encourage home workouts, and we must encourage healthy, immune-boosting nutrition plans. We have incredible experts on this island to aid us here. And I urge all to come forward and promote their ways. We need meal plans, as well as the necessary vitamins we should be taking to boost our immune systems. We need small-space exercise programs available to the public, and we need it for all levels of fitness. I suggest body-weight work, the need for no equipment. There are amazing workouts to be had here. Plan your workout, put your music on, and give it your absolute all. While we remain distant, and in isolation, we must still remain active. We must remain active and we must equip our immune systems to be operating at their absolute best. Correct nutrition and good physical activity is how we do it.

“The ceasing of public transport and closure of all non-essential business has now taken place, and that is just what we need. I applaud,” McGregor continued. “However, I would like an understanding of our airports. Our airports must shut. The only flights to take place is to be for our essential medical equipment. Or to bring our medical staff abroad back home to support. The airports must be shut for everything else. For those attempting to get home, please make wherever you are your home. You will be doing your country an incredible deed by staying put. We will get past this. It is not forever, but it is for now.

“Tonight our defense forces have been mentioned as a possibility in assisting our 15,000 gardi available, but only if necessary. However, it is necessary. I urge our government to utilize our defense forces alongside an garda siochana and for full 24-hour patrol. We cannot go by chance here. Any less than full adherence to these newly put forth methods by any members of our society will not only be a mockery of what we are attempting to do here, it will put the rest of our great nation in danger. We just cannot take that chance. I know our nation will comply, but please use all of our available assets to assist with this. This latest lockdown measure has been announced for two weeks. If we do this fully, and correctly, in two week’s time we will have a massive drop in cases. And in two weeks time, we will likely need to endure more to get the ultimate victory.

“I am now going to quote Yaneer Bar-Yam,” McGregor added. “Yaneer is an MIT trained physicist and complexity scientist who studies pandemics. He warned about global pandemics due to increasing travel for 15 years and he recommended community based monitoring of symptoms to stop Ebola in west Africa in 2014, and it worked. ‘The fastest, and even the only, way to contain COVID-19 in Ireland, America, and around the world is a five week national lockdown. Lockdown would sharply reduce cases. During the first two weeks of a lockdown, infected individuals will either recover from a mild case of COVID-19 at home, or seek medical attention for the 14% of cases that are severe. During the third, fourth, and fifth weeks any newly infected family, or cohabitants of infected individuals will recover or seek medical attention. And their isolation will prevent further spreading. By the end of lockdown, the number of infections will be a small fraction of what they are now.’ This is from a skilled specialist with a winning record in stopping one of these viruses already.

“We have two weeks ahead now. I pray we adhere strictly to all these adjustments, and make our way into the final three week phase—where, after that, we will be moving out again into our new world.

“To President Higgens, to all of our leaders: close our airports, utilize our defense forces. To the nation: abide by these measures impeccably, and prepare for five weeks of it. After that, we are free. Five weeks to freedom. We can do this. The countdown begins now. Godspeed to us all.”

Alongside his video messages, McGregor has also pledged to donate more than $1-million to hospitals around the nation to help in their fight against the pandemic.

At the time of writing, there have been more than 650,000 recorded cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus globally, resulting in more than 30,000 deaths. So far, Ireland accounts for just 2,415 of those cases, and 36 deaths. However, the linear correlation between number of cases and number of deaths has remained strong even as the disease continues to spread exponentially. All evidence suggests that any nation that allows the virus to spread unchecked will risk a significant number of people who require hospitalization. Hopefully increasing self isolation and government lockdown can help stem the tide and avoid further disaster.

UFC ‘currently gathering additional information’ in response to Jon Jones’ arrest

Reports surfaced in the early hours of Thursday, March 26th that UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones is in trouble with the law again. And, like prior incidents, these charges involve the fighter behind the wheel of an automobile. Jones was arrested twice previously in connection with vehicular related charges—a 2012 incident for driving under the influence, and a 2015 incident where he fled the scene of an accident. He plead guilty in both cases.

This time around, it seems he’s been charged with driving while intoxicated, an open container violation – police allegedly found a bottle of Recuerdo tequila behind the passenger seat – and negligent use of a firearm. According to reports from local news station KOAT, officers initially responded to complaints gunshots in the area, and arrived to find Jones seated in the driver’s seat of his car. Despite Jones’ insistence that he wasn’t involved, a search of the vehicle apparently revealed a handgun underneath the driver’s seat. In a brethalyzer test, Jones reportedly registered at twice the legal limit.

When asked for comment by ESPN, the UFC responded

“UFC is aware of the situation regarding Jon Jones in Albuquerque early this morning. The organization has been in contact with Jones’ management team and is currently gathering additional information.”

Jones most recently ran afoul of the law back in July of 2019, when he was charged with battery for an incident involving a waitress at an Albuquerque strip club. Jones eventually pleaded ‘no contest’ to the charges and was given a 90-day deferred sentence. Jones was back defending his UFC title just seven months later, against Dominick Reyes at UFC 247. Whether the UFC takes this incident more seriously remains to be seen.

Cage Warriors postpones April & May events amid increasing COVID-19 restrictions

For fighters involved and fans watching at home, Cage Warriors 113 provided some sense that MMA normalcy just might be retained throughout the the COVID-19 pandemic. There may not be fans in attendance, but we might just be able to get a few fight cards each week or two.

If that was the hope, however, it doesn’t look like Cage Warriors is going to be the one keeping it alive. The longtime European MMA promotion officially announced on Wednesday, March 25th, that they would be postponing their next two upcoming events. Cage Warriors 114 had been scheduled for April 18th in Birmingham, and Cage Warriors 115 for May 16th in Belfast.

“We would like to apologise to fans who were looking forward to these events and thank them for their continued support, but April and May will have to be rescheduled,” said Cage Warriors President Graham Boylan.

“We are still coming to showcase your hometown fighters but a bit later than we would have liked.

“More widely, we would like to assure the MMA community that as soon as the situation in Europe improves, we’ll be putting fights on at the first given opportunity.”

Per the promotion’s press release, the Belfast event will now take place on September 26th, and the Birmingham event on October 10th. In actuality, Cage Warriors announced both dates and locations for those September and October cards back in 2019. So it looks more like they’ve just cancelled these two upcoming cards, and may be moving fights to their later event dates.

Either way, for fans hoping that they’d at least have a couple CWFC cards to look forward to in the next few weeks, they’re going to find themselves disappointed. However, in the best interest of health – both of the fighters and staff, as well as their friends and families – Cage Warriors is almost certainly taking the safest route forward.

Nobody could say McGregor didn’t earn Khabib vs. Ferguson winner ‘if he fights me and beats me,’ says Gaethje

For a fighter like Justin Gaethje, there are probably few better times to look at the big picture in MMA. The top-ranked lightweight could be on the cusp of UFC title contention, but with potential future events up in the air due to the coronavirus pandemic – and title shot opportunities few and far between – he knows that waiting around to be handed a championship bout likely won’t get the job done. Especially not with the specter of former double-champ Conor McGregor hanging over the lightweight division.

McGregor recently returned from an extended hiatus (one marked by multiple legal issues) to defeat Donald Cerrone in the main event of UFC 246. In the buildup and aftermath of the bout, UFC president Dana White made it clear that McGregor’s victory over ‘Cowboy’ would put him next in line for a shot at the winner of Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Ferguson. However, that’s not a plan that’s seemed to interest the Dagestani champ much, if he were to keep his belt. And it’s certainly not a plan that interests the ‘Highlight.’

“I think me and Conor need to fight each other to figure out the No. 1 contender,” Gaethje told MMA Fighting in a recent interview. “Outside of that, if I need to fight someone else to assure myself of the No. 1 contender’s spot and get the winner of that fight, I’ll do that. As long as that’s a sure thing.”

“You know it’s his choice,” Gaethje added. “[Conor McGregor] picks who he fights.

“He knows that if he fights me and beats me, nobody — Khabib [Nurmagomedov], Ali [Abdelaziz], whoever — can’t say much about him earning it or deserving the title shot. But until then, he ain’t going to get it.”

The Trevor Wittman-trained fighter added that he feels chances are “pretty good” that the fight gets made. Especially after a recent interview with McGregor’s boxing coach, Owen Roddy, who said that a bout between the two men sometime in July would “bring the UFC back to life.”

Obviously, that’s no guarantee. But, if the two sides can come together, the lightweight division could have one hell of a scrap on its hands when the UFC likely returns to action in the coming months.

Conor McGregor delivers impassioned plea for action on COVID-19: Lockdown ‘must begin now’

Add Conor McGregor’s voice to those few in the MMA sphere who seem to really be taking the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic seriously. The former two-division champion and UFC superstar took to Instagram recently to deliver a video message, most specifically targeting the government and people of Ireland, but asking that the rest of the world take heed as well.

In it, McGregor is vociferous in his plea that Ireland go into a “full lockdown,” with cancellation of travel and a rallying of government forces and services. As of March 24th, the island nation has had 1,125 confirmed cases of the virus, resulting in six deaths. But, for those who feel these may be rather small numbers, McGregor is clearly hoping to stress the need to get out ahead of the problem rather than waiting for more people to fall ill.

“Hello everyone, hello Ireland,” McGregor began in a two-and-a-half minute video message delivered over social media. “I would like to address my nation. To the people of Ireland, to our President Michael D. Higgins, to Vice Admiral Mellett, to Garda Commissioner Drew Harris, Chief Medical Officer Tony Holohan… I respect you all greatly, and I would like to put forth some of my thinking.

“I want to say that while we are all currently debating a full lockdown, I feel that we must. Any time spent debating this is needless time from the clock. I know a good tough fight when I see one, and we have one on our hands now. I want to call upon my people, the great people of Ireland, this fight needs us all. We are all in the red corner together awaiting the bell. So, let’s gather together and ring the bell ourselves. Including the people of the rest of the world.

“True lockdown must begin, and it must begin now,” McGregor continued. “A lockdown together. A lockdown united. We must close our airports, we must close all non-essential business. We must quit all non-essential travel. Commissioner Harris and Vice Admiral Mellett, we must prepare to deploy our units to all and any known built up areas across our country now. President Higgins, you must give these great men and women the power to enforce this task if necessary.

“However, I know that when the true seriousness of this is understood, as it is becoming now, our great nation will oblige. And impeccably do so. It is time for a full lockdown, and we are ready. Powers that be, I am calling to you all, the fate of our great Ireland depends on it. This is my proposal, and I pray that we can make this happen.

“We need to take the same measures of some of the heavier affected countries, only we must do it in quicker time. We have the advantage here, in that we can see this coming. We can see this coming. We can see this coming, but if we do not act on our advantage then we cannot expect different results. We are not adhering to social distancing, at least not to the extent required to prevent exponential growth. A lockdown will facilitate this. It will reduce transmissions, it will take the pressure off of our frontline staff and it will allow us to identify all of our cases. These methods are stringent but necessary, and have worked in China and Hong Kong.

“Ireland, we have got this. Not only do we have the formula, we have it ahead of time. Let’s go Ireland! Let’s go rest of the world! Lockdown united. Together we stand. God bless us all.”

As of writing, more than 400,000 people have been infected with the COVID-19 coronavirus, resulting in over 18,000 deaths. In Italy alone, almost 7,000 people have died. Meanwhile an early robust government response from South Korea has kept the spread of the disease largely in check in that country. Hopefully that’s the path that Ireland, and other countries around the world just starting to grapple with this pandemic, can take.
